Seven Rules for Managing Creative People

Spoil them with resources, but pay them poorly.
Marci Segal, MS‘s insight:
Ouch. Not happy with his separating out ‘creative’ people with ‘uncreative’ people. Frightened about where this article might lead. Your feelings/ thoughts?

Hi Marci,
I agree with your point, this separation-myth is still a no go ….. for us “knowers”. However, since the myth is still out there, I just decoded it (for me myself and for my communication with others, may it be in training, keynotes, acquisition or elsewhere):
1) Sure all people are creative – and yet, there is indeed a difference.
The DIFFERENCE is:
- Some are aware of it and/ or are working in the, what we in Europe call, “creative economies”
- and some aren’t and/or don’t.
2) If in a discussion, a training or an article enough time is available I even go a bit deeper and utilize my model of the “Multiple creativities” – and not later than here people normally get it.
It’s just like with the parrot-example: Both legs are equal ….. especially the left one
And mostoften it works – people getting the hang of it … and now we are talking !

Nice Match. I like your approach to opening the door for all people to embrace their natural ability to generate new ideas, make new decisions and take new actions.
Here’s another one to add to your strategy: one does not have to be creative to go creative things. When I’ve used it in workshops, keynotes and conversations I notice people’s heads nodding with agreement.
Let’s keep at it!
Hi Marci,
good one as well! I guess the bottom line is, bringing creativity down to earth – or, opposite, to elevate people not just to “ok ok, might be I am creative” but up to the level “Yes, Off course I’m creative!”. And for most people, from what I recognized, it’s both a revelation and a relaxation. Or a realization … in terms of that what Elvis once evoked: “Everyone has a flaming star” .
The catch is: It’s a biggy for both … for those who realized – and for those who assisted in realization (at least that’s what it is for me: A cherished moment in time)!
Beautiful.
